Jesus Christ is the wild Messiah of the Gospels. Jesus is not the tame and docile, perfectly parted blond hair, manicured nails, blue eyed Jesus you see in so many icons that attempt to ensnare the Lord into our own culture's image. Jesus came to restore us as the image bearers of God, but instead we have continued to make God in our own image! In doing so, we have moved farther away from Jesus and His Gospel as His truths have been put in submission to our cultural values. We need to flip this and submit our culture to the Spirit of God! The Jesus of the Gospels is not the buddy Jesus that so many modern American Christians have made Him to be nor is the Holy Spirit our personal self-help life coach. Jesus is not that master who would never do anything or ask you to do anything that would upset your happy comfortable life of middle class mediocrity in the USA! These icons of Jesus are idols that need to be cast down because as long as WE follow a Jesus so far removed from the Gospels then WE will never make room in our hearts for the Jesus who breaks cultural expectations and revolutionizes religious anticipations. The Jesus who came to set us free is the wild Messiah of the Gospels! Read the Gospels and follow this Jesus—He will set you free of your disillusionments and lead you into the real abundant life that is far greater than anything this world or our culture can provide. I am praying for each us to be led by the Spirit...May revival start here in this heart!
